Qualcomm and Alphabet team up for automotive AI

Qualcomm Inc. is teaming up with Alphabet's Google Inc. to provide a combination of chips and software that will allow automakers to develop their own artificially intelligent voice assistants using technology from both companies.

Qualcomm, whose chips have long powered phones powered by Google's Android operating system, has expanded into the automotive space, with chips that can power car dashboards and self-driving systems used by companies such as General Motors. On Tuesday, Qualcomm said it was working with Google to develop a version of the Android car operating system that would run smoothly on Qualcomm chips.

Google's Android Automotive OS is the product that automakers use behind the scenes to power their cars' computing systems. Qualcomm and Google said automakers will be able to utilize the joint product and Google's artificial intelligence technology to create voice assistants that are unique to the automaker and don't need to rely on the driver's phone to work.
