ChatGPT's Weekly Users Have Grown to 200 Million

2024-08-30

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 200 million weekly active users, twice as many as last fall.

ChatGPT, which launches in 2022 and generates human-like responses based on user prompts, has surpassed 200 million active weekly users from 100 million last year. More than 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies use its product, and since the launch of ChatGPT-4o mini in July, usage of its automated application programming interface (API), which allows software programs to talk to each other, has doubled.

The GPT-4o mini is a small, cost-effective AI model designed to make its technology more affordable and less energy intensive, allowing the startup to target a broader customer base.

ChatGPT has driven the popularity of AI and fueled a skyrocketing valuation of San Francisco-based OpenAI.

Separately, U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (U.S. AI Safety Institute) said earlier in the day that AI startups OpenAI and Anthropic signed agreements with the U.S. government to conduct research, testing and evaluation of their AI models.

Apple and Nvidia are in talks to invest in OpenAI as part of a new funding round that would value the ChatGPT maker at more than $100 billion.
